Herman Belkin was born in 1920
and brought up in the Brownsville section of Brooklyn. While attending Brooklyn
College as a science major, he volunteered for military service in April 1942.
Mr. Belkin went through basic
training with the Armored Forces at Ft. Knox, Kentucky. Drove motorcycles and
halftracks. In June of 1942 he was transferred to Scott Field, Illinois Army Air
Force School for officers squadron communications training.
Mr. Belkin served as
communications officer in the 3rd antisubmarine squadron at Army Air
Base in Dover Delaware and set up the first control tower on the field.
In 1943 Mr. Belkin was transferred
to the 7th Air Force (Pacific Theater), 819th Bombardment
Squadron (B24’s), as communications officer, was responsible for air and ground
radio communications and maintenance, telephone and teletype, message center,
cryptographic security, code training, etc.
Mr. Belkin was stationed in
Hawaii, Guam, Saipan and Okinowa (called “Island Hopping”).
Mr. Belkin was commissioned a
captain in 1945.
In 1949 Mr. Belkin married Barbara
Rhodes. Graduated NYU Dental School in 1951 and moved to Little Neck in 1952
where he opened his practice of general dentistry. He still works part time.
Dr. Belkin is a Charter Member of
the Little Neck – Douglaston Lions Club where he served as President, Secretary
and Treasurer several times over. In 2002 he was Lion of the Year.
