The Business Community Service Award

Douglaston Market
Diego vonSchmeling

Diego vonSchmeling came to this country from Paraguay seventeen years ago. He came here with the hope and determination to find and realize the all-American dream.

When Diego arrived in America, he barely spoke the language. His first jobs were weeding gardens and painting roofs in Douglas Manor. Soon thereafter, one would find Diego serving coffee at the market in Douglaston, where he worked long hard hours dedicating himself to the customers he served.

Diego is still serving coffee to his customers at the Douglaston Market. However, as a result of his dedication and hard work, today he is the proud owner of the Douglaston Market.

Since buying the business 8 years ago, the Market has undergone a face lift and has grown to become an important part of the community and its residents.

Douglaston Market has supported numerous neighborhood events, which include pizza parties for PS 98 and the Community Church of Douglaston. Douglaston Market has also sponsored the Little Neck-Douglaston Memorial Day Parade’s Art & Essay Contest.

Diego is proud to be part of, and at the same time, service, such a fine community, where he resides as well. Diego has a wife, Karin, and two beautiful daughters, Max and Alex.
