The Douglas S. MacKay Community Service Award

Mamie C. Smith

Mamie Smith has been a resident of Bayside for over 50 years. She is married to Clyde Smith and is the proud mother of ten children and lots of grandchildren.

Mamie attended Dillard University, in New Orleans, Louisiana, where she majored in nursing and minored in drama. For the most part of her career, Mamie has worked with emotionally disturbed children. Children are one of Mamie’s greatest priorities. She is very much focused on encouraging young, underprivileged children by increasing their potential and showing them who they are and where they are going.

Despite Mamie’s busy schedule of attending to her own family’s needs and devoting the rest of her time to teaching emotionally disturbed children, she always found time to help those in need. She helped needy Hurricane Katrina victims by sending money to the Louisiana Katrina headquarters and has even sent thousands of shoes and clothes, including her own, to those in need. She also fundraised for scholarships for qualified students who were victims of Hurricane Katrina.

Mamie is a Member of Community Board 11, where she actively works on bylaws, particularly those that support the mentally disabled, health committees and rezoning issues. She is also a member of the Eleanor Roosevelt Democratic Club. As a former president of the Club, she works primarily on fundraisers that finance the upkeep of the club and sponsor people to the national convention. Mamie has also been elected President of the P.T.A for P.S. 31Q and Marie Curie J.H.S. 158. She has also served as Historian of the National Congress of Parent’s and Teacher’s Association and the Board of the Queens Cluster Federal Credit Union as Secretary of the Supervisory Committee and Credit Chairperson. She is a member of the NAACP, Bayside Branch.

Mamie has received many honors for her dedication and hard work to the community, some of which include: Woman of the Year Award from the Office of the Borough President of Queens; Rosemary Gunning Award; Citation of Honor and Congressional Proclamation from the Eleanor Roosevelt Democratic Club; Service Awards from Community Board 11; Commendation and Citation for Contributions to Hurricane Relief of 1992 from the Louisiana State House of Representatives; Citation of Honor from the Queens Cluster Federal Credit Union; Wall of Tolerance Award from the Rosa Parks National Campaign for Tolerance; and Certificate of Appreciation from the Board of Education for over 25 years of service.
