Wreath Laying Ceremony at Veterans Monument
Following this Interfaith Service there will be a Wreath Laying Ceremony at the Veterans Monument and Flagpole, Alameda Avenue and Northern Boulevard. Monsignor George Ryan will offer a prayer for those men and women who gave their lives for our country. As we remember those who have served their country to preserve our freedom, may we also reaffirm our faith in God through whom freedom is possible.
Please join us for brunch and refreshments after the Wreath Laying Ceremony, at St. Anastasia's Father Smith Hall on Alameda Ave.
Note of Thanks
We extend our appreciation to all those who planned and participated in today's service of worship; and to the clergy, the organist, Mr. Guy Brewer, and the soloist, Farah Chandu.
A special thanks is expressed to the Parade Committee for its enthusiastic cooperation.
** MEMORIAL DAY PARADE BEGINS AT 2PM **
INTERFAITH SERVICE
The Interfaith Service has
traditionally been an integral part of the Little Neck-Douglaston Memorial Day
Parade observations. It represents an opportunity for the community to come
together in houses of worship to honor those who fought for the freedom of our
country, and to offer thanks to the supreme being for the freedoms we now enjoy.
The service is rotated among various religious places of worship within Little
Neck and Douglaston. The host place is responsible for coordinating the service
in terms of selecting readings and songs, as well as providing a homily, and
printing an agenda with the help of a Parade Committee member. Representatives of
the other places participate by doing readings or psalms. Members of the
community, as well as the various veterans organizations, attend. A necrology
honoring those veterans from the community who have died during the year is also
performed. It is a moving and sentimental event. Rabbi Morton Pomerantz is the
religious representative and serves as the coordinator of this event along with
Jack Harrison .
The service has been rotated among the Community Church of Little Neck, the
Community Church of Douglaston, Zion Episcopal Church,
Christ
Evangelical Lutheran Church
and St. Anastasia. It is
generally held at 10:00 AM, on the morning of the parade, followed by the wreath
laying ceremony at the flag and memorial at the corner of Northern Blvd. and
Alameda Avenue.
This year the interfaith service will be held on Monday, May 26th, 2008, at the Community Church of Little Neck, 46-16 Little Neck Parkway, Little Neck, NY 11362
